GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) Guide

GEO isn't SEO. It’s a different beast and you need to learn how to harness it. Learn the nuances in this guide.

Capture the flood of free organic traffic that can come from generative engines like ChatGPT / SearchGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft CoPilot. These AI search engines work differently than typical search engines of the past. Your content needs strong editing and technical markup to get featured.

Provide Answers for Generative Engines

As answer engines, generative engines look for clear-written content that concisely answers a searcher's question. You won't be seen if you don't offer personalized expertise, however. That's where professional editing can entice the engines to pick up your content.

Implement a Comprehensive Author Profile

WHO writes the content matters. Prove a real person wrote the content so generative engines can give weight to content. The modern way to do this is Schema markup. I implement this on kenmorico.com. It's hidden content on the page that describes the author, their profile page, social profiles, and other background info like credentials.

Generative Engine Optimization Tactics for Websites

  1. Unique & Clear Language - GEO is not SEO. The page must be in your voice and offer unique expertise. Write human-to-human.
  2. 1 page = 1 purpose - What is the purpose of the page? What question are you answering? Don’t confuse the robots. Make a webpage with clear purpose & present a solution at the start of the content.
  3. Be the Source or Refer to One - Create your own research if have unique data. Reference authoritative sources if you don’t. Use proper HTML markup so engines know the attributes of the citation and can properly reference it.
  4. Structure for Readers & AI - Make it easy to read page content and digest information. Use bullets, block quotes, bold, italic, & meaningful organized headings. If it makes sense to users it will make sense to AI.
  5. Use Hidden Markup - Use structured markup that is invisible to users. Utilize schema.org categories to declare attributes of a page: mark it as a recipe, article, reference the author and author’s webpage, publisher, etc. AI can make sense this since it’s true data.
  6. Present as a Trusted Author - People need experts. Make sure the author of the page has an “About” page that you link to. The author should be an expert with a photo. The about page should list credentials. People won’t trust faceless content no one will stand behind.
