Books Not Noise
How I harness the power of focused books through a modern note-taking process.
Do you feel like we are scrolling information but not really learning anything useful for our personal productivity or career? For the last several years I’ve been taking notes on deep books. The way I do it:
- Highlight passages using the Amazon Kindle app or Apple Books app [The Libby app] is great for reading books for free on Kindle].
- Export the highlights into 1 large text document.
- Add the file to a folder with other book notes.
- Reference the book notes over and over when stuck on something: personal or business.
Books are focused. The author of the book has a clear focus when creating, editing, and publishing the book. By focusing on one book at a time, WE become focused and truly harness the knowledge of the author.
When I revisit notes I’ve taken years ago, I notice things I didn’t when I was reading them. In essence, the book becomes new again and I receive more knowledge.
When I was taking a novel writing class at UCLA Extension in 2002, my professor told us students, “put the book you are writing away for 6 months, revisit it, and you’ll be a different person.”
In essence, we change over time and gain insights we didn’t when we first absorb information (or write it down).
So, I encourage you to read books that have gained a reputation, take notes, and revisit those notes regularly when you need inspiration and guidance.
