Starting a Business is Easy. Running a Business is Hard.
Read my story about my mentor's advice - and how I incorporate it today in consulting.
When I was 21, working for a tech startup in Santa Monica in 2001, I befriended a coworker who seemed to everything going for him: money, new custom luxury car, and confidence. He wasn’t an employee -- he was a consultant.
Curious as to how he got his business together, I asked him about his operation. He said, "Starting a business is easy. Running a business is hard."
The day to day front I saw in the office went much deeper.
Over the years as I’ve consulted more and more it’s absolutely true: starting a business is easy, running a business is hard.
Starting a business just takes time with paperwork, marketing, office space, etc. but once you’re set up it doesn’t need much maintenance. It’s the constantly changing business environment that poses challenges.
It’s harder than ever now with so many obstacles: globalization, AI, population surge, stagflation, etc. But the difficulty is what gives it value. The value in the business is twofold: you genuinely help others succeed through consulting and as a consulting business owner you overcome challenges.
With consulting, you see people face to face. You see progress in real time. In most cases, business problems are marketing problems. That’s why I love offering marketing coaching to business owners and ambitious professionals. For instance, just last year I helped a client by creating a 277% increase in digital marketing KPIs and they received a 2000% ROI on my consulting & coaching fees. Consultants and coaches can REALLY move the needle when they leverage technology correctly.
